MHI has recently received an order from China Steel Corporation (CSC, President: Shi-yu Song) of Taiwan for two units of walking beam type furnaces for hot rolling.
CSC is the largest steel manufacturer in Taiwan with its main steel plant in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, and together with its affiliate, Chulong Iron & Steel, has an annual crude steel production capacity of approximately 16 million tons. The Kaohsiung Works has two hot rolling mills, No. 1 and No. 2, with an annual production capacity of 4 million tons and 3 million tons, respectively.
The furnaces ordered by MHI will replace furnaces No. 1 and No. 2, two of the four furnaces at the No. 1 Hot Rolling Mill, each of which has a production capacity of 300 tons per hour.
Since 1967, when we succeeded in commercializing the world's first walking beam heating furnace, we have delivered many furnaces of the same type both domestically and internationally, and have continued to lead the world with our abundant experience and advanced technology. On the other hand, when renewing furnaces No. 1 and No. 2, which had been in operation for 32 years, CSC aimed to achieve thorough energy saving and low emission by introducing state-of-the-art equipment, not only as a mere aging measure, but also to improve economic efficiency and the environment at the same time. CSC highly evaluated our proposal based on our extensive experience and state-of-the-art technology, and we were able to win the contract after competing with several leading European manufacturers.

Over the past half century, we have delivered 154 furnaces of this type in Japan and overseas, and more than 80 of them have been in operation for more than 30 years. In the future, we expect that demand for furnaces will continue not only for the most recently scheduled renewal of the remaining No. 3 and No. 4 furnaces at the No. 1 hot rolling mill of CSC Tono and the renewal of furnaces within the CSC Group, but also in the steel industry, where demand is strong, for further energy-saving promotion and aging measures, both in Japan and overseas.
