Ltd. has received an order from Kobe Steel, Ltd. for a new walking beam heating furnace to be installed in the No. 2 Block Plant of the Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel, Ltd.
Kobe Steel, Ltd. produces approximately 7.5 million tons of crude steel annually at its main steel mills in Kobe and Kakogawa.
The heating furnace for which MHI has received an order is part of the installation of major facilities associated with the planned consolidation of upper processes at the Kakogawa Works in fiscal 2017. The furnace will be equipped with a regenerative burner instead of the conventional flue-type heat exchanger, which will significantly reduce the fuel consumption rate, and a waste heat boiler and a special heat recovery system (hot cooling system) that converts the cooling water in the furnace structure into steam, which will provide the steam necessary for other facilities in the steel mill. The furnace is equipped with maximum energy-saving technology that also supplies steam necessary for other facilities in the steel mill. The furnace is scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2016.
Since 1967, when we succeeded in commercializing the world's first walking-beam heating furnace ahead of our competitors, we have delivered heating furnaces incorporating energy-saving technologies that were ahead of the times in this field both in Japan and overseas, and have continued to lead the world with our rich experience and advanced technical capabilities. Over the past half century, we have delivered 154 of the same type of heating furnaces in Japan and overseas. By introducing state-of-the-art technology, we aimed to achieve thorough energy saving and low emission, and to increase economic efficiency and further improve the environment at the same time. Our proposal was highly evaluated by Kobe Steel, Ltd. and we were able to win the contract after competing with several companies, including leading manufacturers in Europe.
Following the order for two hot-rolling furnaces from China Steel Corporation (CSC) of Taiwan in June of this year, we are actively responding to inquiries for energy-saving modification of heating furnaces and replacement of aging furnaces in Japan, as well as making energy-saving technology proposals to steelmakers in India and Southeast Asia overseas, and we expect to continue to receive orders in the future. We expect to continue to receive orders in the future.
