NEWS Participation in the Japan-India Energy Forum 2017 "Conference

On January 9, 2017, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), a national research and development corporation, jointly with the Indian Institute of Energy and Resources (TERI), held the Japan-India Energy Forum 2017 "Conference " as a speaker and gave an overview of the initiatives related to the energy efficiency and conservation demonstration project for production facilities for steel in India.

The conference featured lively discussions among experts from the public and private sectors in three sessions on smart grids, energy conservation, and the transportation sector, with the aim of promoting and strengthening Japan's cutting-edge technologies in the energy sector.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, and Mr. Goyal, Minister of Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, and Minerals, India, spoke on bilateral energy cooperation. Mr. Furukawa, Chairman of the Board of NEDO, made a speech on energy and environmental issues in India, especially on grid stabilization technology, and expressed his commitment to contribute to the construction of a sustainable social system in India by utilizing Japanese technology and expertise.

In a session on "Energy Efficiency in Industry," MHI Director and Executive Officer Sakata spoke about the company's ongoing project to install regenerative burners in an existing plate furnace at SAIL's Rourkela steel plant in India to demonstrate the energy-saving effects of the furnace.

The Indian government has announced a goal of achieving 300 million tons of crude steel production by 2030, compared to the current 120 million tons of crude steel production capacity, and environmental measures to accompany the increase in production have become one of the issues. Since it is expected that old facilities that have not yet sufficiently saved energy through heat exchange will be modernized in the future, MHI will take this energy conservation demonstration project as an opportunity to promote the use of Japan-originated energy conservation technology in India.
